Donkey Kong 3 (Nintendo) PCB repairs

10/09/2003

Problem: Missing Sprites

The board ran perfect, but no motion sprites showed up. I swapped for a known good video board and still had the same problem. Usually on any DK type pcb this problem is on the Video board. Looking at the schematics, I looked for activity on the LS367s at 3A and 6A, nothing! All inputs were stuck high. Just for fun, I swapped out the Z80A DMA controller and tried the board again. It worked and the sprites had returned. DK and DKJr won't run with a bad DMA controller, but it appears that DK3 can.

Solution: Bad Z80A DMA controller on the CPU board
